A few days back, a piece of my wisdom tooth on the top left in my mouth broke off and the rest of the tooth acquired a sharp edge. It was not hurting, but when I touched it with my tongue, it felt sharp.

Just to be on the safe side, I decided to visit the dentist.

The doctor was a pleasant lady – Dr Brijita. She convinced me that instead of grinding the jagged edge, it would be better to take out the wisdom tooth (via dental surgery). And after some pondering (about 10 seconds) I gave the go ahead to take out the tooth.

I didn’t feel any pain because I was given a pain killer injection prior to taking out the tooth. But the actual procedure lasted well over an hour. She had to put a lot of effort in removing the tooth. At one point, I even felt some regret over my decision to allow the doctor to remove the tooth. I was like – “Oh God, how did I get into this situation!”. It was a bloody affair; literally!

After taking out the tooth, the doctor put 3 stitches to seal the cut. I have to make a return trip to the dentist after 5 days, to remove the stitches as they are non-dissoluble stitches which need to be taken out.

She also gave me pain killer tablets (Ketorol-DT), antibiotics (Tresmox CV) to prevent bacterial infection, and tablet (Seplix) to contain swelling if any. I was also told not to drink anything warm/hot or eat anything hard for two days.

Wisdom tooth extraction

Photo taken after the wisdom tooth was extracted

In the image above, some whiteness you see inside the circle is the bone sticking out. My dentist tells me it is harmless. You can also see the blood clot. You have to take care not to disturb the blood clot; which means – no poking the place with your finger or eating hard food for a few days. It seems the blood clot aids recovery.

Total cost of the trip to the dentist

Cost of Wisdom tooth extraction – Rs 500 ~ USD $10
Cost of medicine – Rs 258.60 ~ USD $5.50

Total cost – Rs 758.60 ~ USD $15.50

After I came home, for some time, I had to spit out blood. My mother has experience taking out all her teeth. She is now using a teeth set. She tells me this little blood is normal and will abate within 24 hours.

Do’s And Don’ts After Tooth Extraction

I came across this interesting resource that explains the do’s and dont’s after oral surgery.

One Nagging Thought

The wisdom tooth below the one which was plucked is in good shape and is not causing me any trouble. Now I am wondering if I will have to eventually pluck that one too ? I hope I won’t have to.
