  • Keyboard Shortcuts – Adobe Photoshop CS4

Posted on January 1st, 2009 linuxandfriends No comments

Adobe Photoshop CS4 is a fabulous graphics suite. After watching the video of Adobe creative suite, I was really looking forward to trying out this software. Recently I got lucky and was able to spend some time – a few hours really, in trying out Adobe Photoshop CS4 on a friend’s computer. And to put it gently, I am visibly impressed.

Note: Linux users can run Adobe Photoshop without any problem in WINE – though the latest version Adobe creative suite 4 (CS4) is not known to run in Linux till date. But that is bound to change in the future.

One of the most efficient ways to work in Adobe Photoshop is to master all the keyboard shortcuts that it sports.

Trevor Morris has put together a nice set of Adobe Photoshop keyboard shortcuts. The shortcuts are made available as a PDF file which comes in handy. It seems there are slight variations in the keyboard shortcuts across different Adobe Photoshop versions. And he has different versions of Adobe Photoshop keyboard shortcuts for Adobe Photoshop 5 to CS4. And also for Adobe Bridge and Adobe Camera Raw.

Check out the shortcuts at his website.

I enjoy playing online games. This is because they are free, and the game play is simple.

Wagner James Au at GigaOm.com concurs with me. He has put together a collection of ten most popular games played online for 2008. Check out the list. My favourite from the list is obviously Papa’s Pizzeria. Which is your favourite game ?

  • Scribes – A sleek, lightweight text editor for Linux

Posted on December 25th, 2008 linuxandfriends No comments

Editors used for editing text are dime a dozen. But if you are looking for a text editor which satisfies all your text editing needs, then you should give Scribes a serious try.

Scribes is an open source, lightweight and sleek text editor which has a whole lot of features built-in. It is developed using Python and Python libraries for GNOME. The first time I installed Scribes on my machine running Linux, I was taken in by its spartan interface. It did not even sport a menu as seen in most text editors, rather there was this minimal toolbar which displayed a few icons for searching, opening a new or existing document and so on. Nothing spectacular. But I realised the real power of Scribes once I started using it.

All Linux distributions have a text editor set by default. For example, in Ubuntu, nano is set as the default text editor for use in console mode. In Linux, you can change default editor to one of your choice by changing the $EDITOR environment variable.

  • SpeedCrunch – An easy to use scientific calculator for Linux

Posted on December 18th, 2008 linuxandfriends No comments

Recently when I installed Arch Linux on my machine, I was on the lookout for a lightweight calculator to be used on my LXDE desktop. My search led me to SpeedCrunch.

SpeedCrunch is a light weight, fast, precision scientific calculator released under GPL. The first time I ran this calculator on my machine, I found its interface rather queer; considering I was used to the traditional view of a calculator. SpeedCrunch has a large text area (Output) which displays the result of the calculation and a small text field (Input) right below it in which the user can type commands. Talking of commands, there are a whole lot of stock commands available.

  • Does Bicycling cause Constipation ?

Posted on December 17th, 2008 linuxandfriends No comments

Since the day I bought a bicycle, I have been spending time on the saddle for atleast one hour every day. One thing I have noticed since then is that, prior to starting my cycling regimen, I used to have no problem attending to the call of nature.  But now a days even though I am not exactly constipated, I do feel discomfort while doing the deed every day.
