Best time to eat before and after an exercise
Posted on July 5th, 2009 No comments
What is the best time to eat before and after your daily exercise ?Leslie Bonci who is the Director of sports nutrition at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center says you should consider food as a part of your equipment.
Ideally food should be taken an hour before exercise. And when you eat, it should be a fist size portion of food. Leslie says, most people make the mistake of either starving before an exercise or over eating – both of which are bad.
A fist-sized amount of food – such as a granola bar, a peanut butter jelly sandwich and so on which should give enough carbohydrates and proteins, gives the body enough food to be available as an energy source but not as much to give you an upset stomach.
And don’t forget to drink around 20 ounces ~ 0.5 liters of water an hour before your workout. If you have liquid ahead of time, you will be better hydrated when you start to be physically active.
Put fluid back into your body as you exercise, says Leslie. This is because your body loses water as sweat and you have to replenish it at regular intervals. Leslie says you should drink 14 to 40 ounces of water per hour depending upon your sweat rate.
Post exercise, have a snack within 15 minutes.

Cook food in a €5 cardboard box using Sun's energy
Posted on April 13th, 2009 No commentsJon Bohmer is a a Norwegian-born entrepreneur based in Kenya, and also an inventor who has created a solar cooker made of cardboard. And the interesting thing is, this solar cooker cost only 5 Euros. He has named his invention the Kyoto Box – after the international environmental treaty to reduce global warming.
Kyoto Box - Solar Cooker made from cardboard.
The ingeniously simple design uses two cardboard boxes, one inside the other, and an acrylic cover that lets in the sun’s rays and traps them.
Black paint on the inner box, and silver foil on the outer one, help concentrate the heat. The trapped rays make the inside hot enough to cook casseroles, bake bread and boil water. You can boil 10 litres of water in 2 hours. Bohmer won the first prize of $75000 from the Forum for the Future, for his ingenious invention.

Tips to keep fruits and vegetables fresh
Posted on October 15th, 2008 No commentsA Linux user is entitled to his or her daily quota of fruits and vegetables. Usually, when ever I buy fruits or vegetables from the market, I tend to dump the whole lot into the refrigerator. And many times, I have found that some vegetables and fruits get bad quicker than the others. Little did I know that keeping certain fruits or vegetables near some others, actually speeds up the ripening process of the later, thus shortening their life span.
