Google has released an extension for its flagship web browser Chrome that allows you to read and compose mails in your Gmail account while offline.

Here is how it works …

Offline Gmail Interface

The first thing you have to do to access Gmail offline is to download the offline Google mail extension for your Chrome browser.

This requires you to log in to your Google account by providing your username and password.

Initially when you start using the Google mail extension in Chrome browser, you  will be asked to explicitly allow the extension to store a copy of your mail locally.

From here on, using the offline Google mail extension, you can read as well as compose and send email even while disconnected from the internet. And each time you connect to the Internet,  your actions will be synchronized to reflect in your Gmail account online.

Offline Google mail extension works similar to any mail client that has IMAP access. Only it is targeted specifically at Gmail users.
