  • Quick First Aid for Burns Treatment

Yesterday while preparing lunch, my right hand came in contact with a cooking vessel on the stove. I withdrew my hand immediately. However, it didn’t stop two of my fingers from getting second degree burns.  Here are a few first aid tips on minimizing the after effects of burns.

    How to Treat Burns

Expose your burnt part to cold running water

After two of my fingers got burnt,  I immediately wet my fingers with cold, running tap water and it brought me quick relief from pain. I kept my fingers in running water for a couple of minutes; then I dried the fingers and applied Vaseline (Petroleum Jelly) liberally to the burnt parts.  I was able to get respite from pain but the burns on my fingers developed blisters – I believe, a consequence of exposing the burns to cold water.

Use potato as a quick remedy for burns

If you would like to avoid blisters, another first aid remedy is to slice a potato in half and scrape the flesh of the potato onto a plate making a paste and then covering the burnt parts with this potato paste. Doing this will draw all the heat from the burns outward to the potato thus bringing instant relief.

This first aid remedy has to be applied immediately after you have received burns and should not be delayed.

Using a potato this way will reduce or eliminate scars & blisters and speed up the healing time. After the initial burn the healing process begins.

Please note that the above mentioned first aid treatment for burns is to be used for first degree (minor burns) and less serious second degree burns. However, if these burns are extensive you should immediately visit a hospital and get treated by a qualified doctor. Remember, first aid is never a substitute to professional medical treatment.
