Evernote is a free note taking software that allows you to capture, organize, and find information across multiple platforms. Using Evernote, you can do the following -
- Take notes
- Clip web pages
- Snap photos using your mobile phone and save it in Evernote.
- Record audio
- Create To-Do lists

One of the most valuable features of Evernote is that all your notes can be available anywhere you have access to the internet. Evernote provides a free web account to each user and all their notes are synchronized with their respective web accounts at regular time intervals. What is more, you can use Evernote software for free.

Evernote Features

The following are some of the salient features of Evernote software.
- Import all your notes from Microsoft OneNote 2007
- Tag your notes with words and phrases.
- Powerful search. Even identifies text in images.
- Supports creation of handwritten notes (Ink notes).
- Decent support for rich text format in the inbuilt notes editor.
- Create multiple notebooks
- Attach files in notes. Supports PDF, Doc, Excel, Powerpoint and many other file formats. Only files of type PDF, JPG, WAV, PNG, MP3, GIF, and AMR are supported for Free users. Premium members may attach files of any type.
- You can email one or more notes to multiple email recipients right from within the Evernote software.
- You can share notebooks with everyone or with select individuals.
- You can add notes to Evernote via your Twitter account.
Evernote has two plans – Free and Premium. The free users get nearly all the functions of Evernote but has caps to the amount of notes they can upload into their Evernote web account. And the Evernote software for free users carries ads.

For a nominal monthly cost, the premium users get the Evernote software ad free, they have higher upload limits for their notes, and they can attach any type of file to their notes.

Evernote for Linux

Evernote software has been released for Windows, Mac OS X, Blackberry, iPhone, Palm Pre, Sony Ericsson, and Windows Mobile platforms. Surprisingly, Evernote Linux support is still lacking. However, Linux users can use the Web Clipper to clip notes from web pages to their evernote account online.

Web Clipper is a plug-in or addon for Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari and other web browsers. The Evernote Web Clipper Firefox addon can be downloaded here. Evernote also has a Web Clipper plugin for Google Chrome Web browser which you can download from the Google Chrome Extensions site.

Recently, Internet guru & entrepreneur Guy Kawasaki listed 14 practical ways to use Evernote, which speaks volumes about the usefulness of this nifty free software. All things considered, I find Evernote to be a very good note taking application. The fact that they provide a free web account to store all your notes makes this service all the more useful.
