Tata Group – Arguably India’s largest conglomerate with interests in a mind numbing variety of  consumer and business related products, have tied up with Japan’s largest mobile operator NTT DoCoMo to bring to India a fabulous cellular connection namely the Tata DoCoMo connection.

Formerly known as Tata Teleservices Limited (TTSL), Tata DoCoMo came into being after the Japanese firm acquired 26% of the common shares of the TTSL.  This bodes well for the general populace in India as healthy competition in any form is good for the consumers and the market. Secondly,  Tata DoCoMo has  rolled out a new GSM service  (a first of it’s kind) which provides 1 second pulse instead of the 1 min pulse provided by its competition .

This means that if the duration of your call is just 20 seconds, you are charged only for 20 seconds and not 1 minute. This leads to significant savings of money for consumers in the long run.

For this very reason,  two days back, I bought a prepaid cellular connection of Tata DoCoMo. It came with a handy booklet and the SIM card and cost me a mere INR 49 ~ US $1. This prepaid connection comes with life time validity.

The following are the tariff details for the Tata DoCoMo service.

    Tariff Details

    Details Rates in Indian Rupees
Incoming Calls  & Incoming SMS (in home network) Free
Outgoing calls (per min) with 1 second pulse to any landline or mobile phone. 1
STD – State Trunk Dialing (per minute) 1.50
ISD : Key Destinations  (per minute) – Details below.
USA, Canada, UK (Fixed Line), Australia (Fixed Line), Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, New Zealand (Fixed Line) 6.40

    INMARSAT 550
    Outgoing SMS (per 160 characters)
    Local 1
    National 1.50
    International 5

While the rates listed above may be at par with most other cellular providers, what makes this offering from Tata DoCoMo an exciting proposition is their one second pulse and also the tie up with the Japanese which promises more exciting thing to come in the near future. I am keeping my fingers crossed for sure.
