Free CDs and DVDs of Linux and OpenSolaris
Posted on December 23rd, 2008 No commentsIf you are a ‘yet to be‘ or new Linux or Unix user, then your first thought would be how to get a CD or DVD right ? There are not that many organizations which are providing free Linux or Unix CDs but there are a couple of them which ship CDs for free to any location around the world.
- Ubuntu Linux – This is the most popular Linux distribution. And its parent company Canonical has been shipping free CDs of this fantastic Linux distribution for many years now. To order your CD, head over to shipit.ubuntu.com and create an account. Then provide the address to which you want the CD to be shipped to. Having done that, you can hope to receive the CD in 20 days or so.
- Unbreakable Linux – This Linux distribution is developed by Oracle. You can order a free DVD set of this enterprise class Linux distribution by visiting this page and clicking the “Register Now” button. You have to first register yourself before you can place the order.
- Fedora Linux – This is not a free CD distribution program per se like the above two programs. But if you are a Linux enthusiast who has access to a DVD burner and are willing to burn a couple of DVDs each month and sending them to people who are in need of the media then you are eligible to join this program. Please note that you are expected to ship the media at your own expense. Called the ‘Fedora Free Media Program‘, it is a volunteer initiative under Fedora Distribution Project that aims to distribute Fedora Media (DVDs) for free to individuals who couldn’t afford to buy or download.
- OpenSolaris – Sun Microsystems, the creators of OpenSolaris have also unveiled a plan to ship free media to prospective users. To order your copy of free OpenSolaris, visit oscd.sun.com and place your order.
