In an earlier post, I had listed 9 most heart friendly vegetarian foods. Now here are 10 other fruits and vegetables which boost our immune system.

    1. Green Tea – It contains the antioxidant EGCG which reduces the risk of most types of cancer. “The phytonutrients in tea also support the growth of intestinal bacteria. 70% of our immune system is located in our digestive tact. Experts agree that 4 cups of green tea a day will keep our immune system functioning at its peak.
    2. Chilli Peppers – Chilis stimulate the metabolism, act as a natural blood thinner, and help release endorphins. Chilis are also rich in beta-carotene, which turns into vitamin A in the blood and fights infections, as well as capsaicin, which inhibits neuropeptides (chemicals that cause inflammation). They are also believed to have anti-prostrate cancer properties.
    3. Ginger – contains living compounds that improve your health. Chief among them is gingerol, a suppressor that is particularly effective against colon cancer.
    4. Blueberries – This potent little fruit can help prevent a range of diseases from cancer to heart disease. Drizzle with lemon juice and mix with strawberries for a disease-fighting super snack.
    5. Cinnamon – This is a staple spice in any Indian kitchen. Cinnamon is rich in antioxidants that inhibit blood clotting and bacterial growth (including the bad-breath variety). It also helps stabilize blood sugar thus reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes. Cinnamon also helps fight bad cholesterol.
    6. Sweet Potatoes – This is one of my favorite food. It counters the effects of secondhand smoke and prevents diabetes. Sweet potatoes contain glutathione, an antioxidant that can enhance nutrient metabolism and immune-system, as well as protect against Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, liver disease, cystic fibrosis, HIV, cancer, heart attack and stroke.
    7. Tomatoes – The ubiquitous tomatoes are great in fighting herpes and help in protecting against degenerative diseases. Include tomatoes in your daily diet.
    8. Figs – This fruit is packed with potassium, manganese, and antioxidants. Figs also helps support proper pH levels in the body, making it more difficult for pathogens to invade. The fiber in figs can lower insulin and blood-sugar levels, reducing the risk of diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Select figs with dark skins (they contain more nutrients) and eat them alone.
    9. Mushrooms – Reduce the risk of cancer. Including them in our diet can do wonders to our immune system says experts.
    10. Pomegranates – Again a cancer fighting fruit. Drinking the juice of a pomegranate a day will keep the cancer at bay.
