Wikipedia on a DVD for School Children – Free Download
Posted on October 25th, 2008 No commentsWikipedia is the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit. It is the most famous and fastest growing encyclopedia in the World. It even surpasses the venerable Encyclopedia Britannica in the sheer variety and depth of knowledge. And most importantly, unlike Britannica, the content in Wikipedia is freely accessible – no strings attached.
SOS Children UK in coordination with the Wikimedia Foundation (the organization behind Wikipedia) have compiled a slice of Wikipedia fully vetted for use by school children across the world. The DVD image of the Wikipedia can be downloaded from the SOS Children UK website using a bit-torrent client such as µTorrent.
Features of the Wikipedia DVD selection
- Hand-checked, non-commercial selection from Wikipedia suitable for kids.
- Available as a free download.
- Targeted around the UK National Curriculum and useful for much of the English speaking world.
- Contain 5500 articles with images.
- Is the size of a twenty volume encyclopedia (34,000 images and 20 million words).
- Articles were chosen from a list ranked by importance and quality generated by project members. This list of articles was then manually sorted for relevance to children, and adult topics were removed.
- The content can be navigated using a pictorial subject index, or a title word index of all topics.
