  • Ubiquity – Intelligent web for Internet users

Ubiquity is the dream project of Mozilla foundation – the creators of the world famous web browser, Firefox. The aim of the project is to harness the web in an intelligent way such that all the useful, albeit disconnected elements on the web can be mashed up together and brought right at the finger tips of the end users.

In its current form, Ubiquity is available as a Firefox web browser extension / add-on. Once installed, you can activate it using ‘Ctrl + Space bar‘ keys. Of course there is nothing that stops you from changing the short cut keys to your liking by entering about:ubiquity in Firefox address bar. You need to have Ubiquity installed for the above address to work.

Now that I have Ubiquity installed as an add-on in Firefox, I have access to the following right at my finger tips, namely :

I can do simple calculations and conversions, translate a page or selection to another language, find definitions of words I do not know, mark a location in a map (google maps) and embed it easily in my email, check the current weather at any location around the world and much more.  All this is achieved using the commands in Ubiquity. There are scores of commands with more added as the project matures. If you are using Firefox web browser and have Ubiquity installed, enter the address chrome://ubiquity/content/cmdlist.html to view the full list of commands that you can use in Ubiquity.

After using it, I can say with certainty that Ubiquity ushers in an intelligent web for Internet users.
