Worlds first Google Android based mobile phone runs Linux

Google in collaboration with the mobile carrier T-Mobile and cellphone manufacturer HTC has unveiled the world’s first Google Android based mobile phone. It is an amazing product not just for its aesthetic look but also because the Google Android has been developed on an open platform. The underlying operating system  in Google Android is Linux.

So what is  Android ?

Android is a software stack for mobile devices that includes an operating system, middleware and key applications.

Developers can create applications for the platform using the Android SDK. Applications are written using the Java programming language and run on Dalvik, a custom virtual machine designed for embedded use, which runs on top of a Linux kernel.

T-Mobile G1

T-Mobile has named the cell phone that runs Google Android – T-Mobile G1. This cell phone combines full touch screen functionality and a QWERTY keyboard. It is touted to bring the ultimate mobile web experience with very good integration with all the Google web applications such as Gmail, Youtube, Google Maps and so on. This mobile phone is a major milestone in the cellular world because it brings open mobile Internet to the market.

Google T-Mobile G1

The price of the T-Mobile G1 is set at $179 and is expected to be launched commercially on October 22nd 2008. It comes with a $25 limited data plan and a $35 unlimited data plan. The data plan requires a voice plan on T-Mobile itself. So you are tied to the T-Mobile as your carrier to use this phone.

The T-Mobile G1 will cost $179, $20 less than the iPhone.
