Intel to introduce Atom processor
Intel Atom processor is the name for a new family of low power processors designed specifically for mobile internet devices and a new class of simple and affordable internet centric computers to be launched soon.
The Intel processor was based on an entirely new micro architecture designed specifically for small devices and low power while maintaining the Intel Core 2 Duo instruction set compatibility. This means that all applications that run on an i386 architecture will also run on the Intel Atom powered device.
Features of Intel Atom processor
- Low cost
- Low power consumption
- Support for multiple threads for better performance and increased system responsiveness.
- Intel’s smallest and world’s fastest chip.
- Measures less than 25 mm sq.
- Power consumption in the range 0.65 – 2.4 watts. ( Today’s ordinary laptop consumes 35 watts)
The Intel Atom processor will come in speeds up to 1.86 GHz, support Enhanced Intel SpeedStepĀ® technology, and select SKUs will support Intel Hyper-Threading technology. These capabilities make it the fastest processor in the sub-3 watt space, enabling a rich user experience with fast Web page downloads and support for the latest Web technologies such as Adobe Flash and JavaScript.
Intel Centrino Atom processor technology also enables manufacturers to integrate a range of wireless connectivity options, including Wi-Fi, WiMAX and cellular data.
Intel plans to introduce five Intel Atom processors and three versions of its controller hub.
